Australians – You may ONLY purchase Essiac Extract
The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) (Customs) will not allow Essiac with the loose powdered form of Slippery Elm Bark contained in the Tea packages into Australia. AQIS will only allow the Essiac Extract Liquid into the country.
Their reason for this is a fear of Dutch elm disease (A viral disease of Elm trees) entering Australia and subsequently infecting the many elm trees in ornamental plantings in your cities' streetscapes. They have no problem per se with Slippery Elm Bark as an ingredient. It is not prohibited as a 'therapeutic substance' as such, nor is it a 'controlled substance'. It is prohibited for import it in a powdered form purely because of its' potential as a vector for a viral disease that may affect the disease free elm trees in Oz.
Further to this, (AQIS) does not have a problem with the importation of products containing Slippery Elm if they are in the liquid extract tincture as they considered these to not represent a threat to Australian Elm trees as a vector agent for the virus that causes Dutch elm disease.
